Lactose Intolerance

Hello friends,
In this Blog I would like to give information regarding "LACTOSE INTOLERANCE" also called as lactase deficiency.

Lactose is a sugar present in milk and lactase is the enzyme which helps in digestion of lactose which is known to all.

But in some individuals and infants the enzyme lactase is absent and lactose cannot be digested which causes many problems.

Reasons for Lactose Intolerace:
* Bowel Surgery
* Damage to the cells of small intestine (viral or bacterial infection)
* Diseases like celiac spure.
Symptoms (1)
Bloating, abdominal cramps, flatulence, diarrhea

* Lactose intolerance blood test: Lactose gets converted to glucose after taken by the body. So glucose levels are measured in this test.

* Hydrogen breath test: We have to breathe into a balloon type container and the breath is measured. Very little hydrogen must be present in breath but in case of Lactose intolerance breath hydrogen levels increase.

Usually most of the substances contain lactose milk, milk products, tablets even have lactose which is used as filler.

Lactase supplements: Pills are available which contain lactase and they can be administered before intake of lactose containing food.
Lactobacillus Acidophillus Supplements: This is a probiotic Bacteria which produces lactase enzyme. (2)

Hi Sravani I have a couple of douts regarding the test. In glucose tests won't the body glucose levels interfere with the results? and what is the relation between lactose and hydrogen levels in the body?

Relation between lactose and hydrogen levels in the body 1)In the glucose test intial body glucose levels are measured and then lactose is given and then the glucose levels are measured .The increase of glucose levels indicates whether lactose is converted or not.. 2)Lactose which is undigested in the colon is fermented by bacteria and produces various gases like hydrogen. High levels of hydrogen in the breath indicate improper digestion of lactose. dated 14th september 2011

brief and nice one... can u explain how can you find the glucose that is obtained by lactose conversion when the general glucose in the body is present????is there any other test for it???

Nice to see your comment Sravya.. 1)Initial glucose readings are taken in fasting condition and entire glucose present in body is measured.There is nothing in specific like glucose obtained by lactose conversion.Once the lactose enters the body and gets converted to glucose it gets mixed with the glucose in the body. 2)Another test is Stool Acidity Test > :Stool Acidity Test is done for infants. The amount of acid in the stool is measured. Lactic acid and glucose are produced by undigested lactose are detected in stool sample. dated 14th september 2011
