PLAGIARISM Plagiarism in Latin means "kidnap". It can be said in other words as copying or stealing the information or idea. 1) What is plagiarism? Plagiarism is defined in dictionaries as "the wrongful appropriation, close imitation, or purloining and publication, of another author's language, thoughts, ideas, or expressions, and the representation of them as one's own original work."(1) 2) Why people commit plagiarism? Basically people go for the plagiarism for two reasons, i. Laziness, ii. Lack of information First Laziness comes into play when u fails to plan your work to be completed on time. When a student or a writer fails to write it on time then he / she try to find a simple and easy way to complete the work. And the easiest way to complete the writing is by copy and paste the information. This is called as plagiarism. The second one is lack of information: sometimes the plagiarism is done unknowingly Most of the Indian students not aware of plagiarism, myself came to know about this term from this website during this activity of writing a blog on plagiarism. While writing the information on a blog or an article usually we try to extract the information after reading it from some other sources or capture it in classroom lecture or a seminar. There are different types of plagiarism Based on the extent of plagiarism (i) Minimal plagiarism: substitute a word with a synonym in the original text (ii) Substantial plagiarism: adding more information to the original text (iii) Complete plagiarism: copying the complete information by citing as his/her own work Based on the act (i) Ghost writer: simply copying (ii) Potluck paper: different sources are used (iii) Poor disguise: by changing the words (iv) Self stealer: present it as new article 3) Avoiding plagiarism!. The best way to avoid it is to have a perfect terminological knowledge of plagiarism . Secondly the best way to write it is by "CITATION" and "PARAPHRASING". Citation is providing the source of information that you have taken form. Citation is an very broad term, citation should include the book or author name, year of publishing and the edition. If the correct citation is not provided, the reader is unable to retrieve the information from the main source. It is said to be as plagiarism Paraphrasing is substituting the sentence with a synonym. Most of the authors consider it to be plagiarism and a few don't. Finally once the writing part is over we need to review our information to check for plagiarism, this is to avoid the accidental plagiarism. There are many online plagiarism checkers are available to check your information. So at last I conclude that, knowing the exact meaning of plagiarism is one phase of the coin and Avoiding it is the second phase!. So avoid plagiarism and happy blogging.... HELLO SIR, IT IS VERY NICE BLOG , I have a questition If the blogger use some sentences or paragraph from some magzines or news-papers in their own words in their blogs without giving references, then it came under plagiarism or not?
Satheesh Babu's picture

Hello ankur. It depends of the reviewer of your article or your blog. Mostly paraphrasing is treated a way of preventing the plagiarism. But a few reviewers do not consider it. The best way to avoid is to provide citation.

Rightly said sir. Laziness is the first root cause for plagiarism. One must think on his own before writing.
Satheesh Babu's picture

Yes it is the main reason for the plagiarism. Everything follows it.

Very well elucidated information sir. I think we can add Improper time management. Sometimes students especially, are prone to plagiarism due to last moment submissions etc etc. In that case direct copy & Paste ideas flashes one's mind. What you say??

Yes it is you have rightly said. Due to lack of interest or due to lack of time or due to lazy attitude. People don't plan the work properly. And in the eleventh hour they mess up things by doing plagiarism.

Hello navya. YES, by providing the citation, we are trying to inform the reader that the information given is the work of some other person and we have just used it in helping our concept to be understood by the reader. so citation avoids plagiarism. i hope you have understood it.

Hello ngarambe thank you for going through my blog and coming up with such a nice question. as in my along i have mentioned that a few authors or reviewers doesnot consider paraphrasing as an method to overcome plagiarism, such reviewers consider it to be minimal plagiarism. on contrary there are a few who agree with paraphrasing i.e substituting the information with synonyms. i hope you got my point.

Hello mridulla. Thank you for going through my blog you have come up with a good question. it is not necessary to give citation to the universally know facts. As every one know who is the worthfull creditor for it. But for a research work or a new discovery may not reach everyone so to respect the discoverer and to give him the credit of his or her work we provide citation. Hope you have understood.

Dear sir..... nice blog sir..... what is citation and paraphrasing..??

shafi ..

Satheesh Babu's picture

hello shafi, citation means providing the details of source of information for example in the above blog the following part i have copied Plagiarism is defined in dictionaries as "the wrongful appropriation, close imitation, or purloining and publication, of another author's language, thoughts, ideas, or expressions, and the representation of them as one's own original work."(1) to aviod plagiarism i provide citation to it by suffixing the statement with (1) and at the end of my blog i have given the details of the source i.e.References: 1. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Plagiarism by this i can avoid plagiarism coming to paraphrasing it is very simple we try to substitute the sentence with synonyms without changing the meaning of it. it is just expressing it in your own style hope u have understood!. of not feel free to pour in with few more questions
Amol Malpani's picture

Dear Sir, Can you provide some more details of ghost writers. because according to your blog it is simply copying but recently one professor came for guest lecture and according to him it is the person who put his name in article simply but actully there is no concern about that work. Such author is called ghost writer. So, I am confuse.... please clarify. Regards,
K Rajakrishna's picture

dear anmol sir, as my team leader is out of station so he could not reply to your query, i make an attempt to clarify it instead. ghost writer is someone who is hired to write the autobiography, or a company blog, or website reviews, on music reviews and so on(1), this tradition of ghost writing has also entered into the field of science articles which leads to plagiarism. what a ghost writer actually does is he simply copies small fragments of information from different sources and compiles it make an article without crediting the author(2). As the information is a very small fragments thus it becomes difficult for the plagiarism testers to catch it. thus this way of writing the article is mostly preferred by the students. as it is simple and easy and not easily caught. and about your comment the speaker may be correct in his view as the ghost writer is no where related to the article but has his name with the article. i hape i have satisfied your query. please go through the following reference links to get more information. reference: (1)http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Ghostwriter (2)http://www.plagiarismtoday.com/2006/02/22/instant-article-ghostwriter-ni...
