Scientific fraud

Hello friends, I would like to tell you about a scientific fraud by a professor who is found to be accused for plagiarizing the research journals. His name is Pattium Chiranjeevi, a professor working in chemistry department from Sri Venkateswara University, Tirupati, Andhra Pradesh, India. Within a span of only three years 2004 to 2007, he published more than 70 research papers in various Western scientific journals. He committed two types of plagiarism Full plagiarism and self plagiarism. He used the papers of an Indian chemistry professor Purnendu K. (Sandy) Das Gupta working at the university of Texas, Arlington. He simply changed the name of an element or a chemical compound from his papers and sent the article to other journals. He claimed to use the same instrumentation that has been used by professor Gupta. But actually, such advanced instrumentation was not present at SVU, Tirupati. The person was also found to be committed Self plagiarism. He sent the same article to two different journals. This is the complete violation of copyright laws. Before submitting an article to any journal, they will ask to fill a copyright form and sign on it. It means that the author is transferring complete rights of the article to the journal in which he wants to publish it. He was such a clever person that he used different e-mail addresses in articles in different journals. None of the reviewers of different journals found this may be due to the reason that they do not have time to compare different articles. The issue was discovered by the professor Das Gupta whose articles were plagiarized. He wrote a letter to professor Chiranjeevi that he was going to notify the university regarding the Ph.D. Das Gupta also wrote an official letter along with "Elsevier" legal department to Duvvuru Gunasekhar who was the chair person of department at that time. The university carried out an enquiry on the issue and found that professor Chiranjeevi was guilty. But to cover himself, he has thrown the mistake on his students that the e-mail addresses were used by the students. The university also discovered that the person was also charging students to award them a degree. He is still continuing in his post but was debarred from research supervision and holding any administrative position in the university. His articles were removed from science direct online database. The fame of Indian scientists was declined with this issue. There will be some satisfaction if one does something new in the science and made it to publish. But it cannot be observed in those persons who plagiarize the articles. Ethics were completely demoralized by them. In school days, teachers used to warn and beat the students if they were found to copy from others. But who will beat those persons who plagiarize the articles. Laws should be more stringent and strictly implemented. One of the reasons for plagiarizing articles is to increase the number of articles published so that they can get good name, fame and grants. So, I feel that there should be a change in attitude of all that it is not the number of articles published but only the quality of work produced even in a small number of articles is important.
