Master of Pharmacy in Bangladesh

Master of Pharmacy

Master of Pharmacy (which is abbreviated as M.Pharm) is a degree that is achieved by a Pharmacy student who has completed his Bachelor of Pharmacy from a University in the field of pharmacy. Master of Pharmacy integrates science and healthcare.

Master of Pharmacy in Bangladesh

Master of Pharmacy course started first in 1969. The M Pharm. course was started with only 3 to 4 number of students. In 1970 M Pharm. course was separated into two groups-one is thesis and another is non-thesis in some countries it is termed as Undergraduate program whether others term it as a postgraduate depending program. In Bangladesh it is termed as Postgraduate program. In aspect of Bangladesh the Master of Pharmacy course improves the mode of entry of students (applicants) into the pharmacy profession who has a previous University degree. In Bangladesh the course of Master of Pharmacy along with other courses is open to both local students and international students (student from other countries). In this country the M.Pharm course allows a student to do study with a wide range of subjects which are very much essential for their professional sector. The Universities in Bangladesh develops, teaches and improves skills and knowledge of how to take patient care. Students also get to know how to develop professional career and work for the healthcare of the nation.

Expansion of Master of Pharmacy education in Bangladesh

In Bangladesh Pharmacy comprise many subjects of different classes. Here, in both major programs of Pharmacy (Bachelor of Pharmacy and Master of Pharmacy) all subjects are classified into three major groups:

  • Pharmaceutical and medicinal chemistry, pharmaceutical analysis,
  • Pharmaceutical technology and
  • Pharmacology.

(a) Master of Pharmacy education in Public Universities:

In Bangladesh the University of Dhaka is the institution which first offered the Master of pharmacy education. Later on, some other public Universities and private Universities started Master of Pharmacy along with their other programs. There are five public institutions in Bangladesh which offer Master of Pharmacy. The courses they offer are given below-

(b) Master of Pharmacy education in private Universities:

Among the private institutions, University of Science and Technology (USTC), Chittagong first offered Master of Pharmacy education in Bangladesh. Until 2012, many private institutions are offering Master of pharmacy courses in Bangladesh and some Universities are trying to start Master of Pharmacy. Most of them are located in the capital city Dhaka and the rest are in Chittagong and Noakhali. Master of pharmacy courses is not homogenous in all the institutions throughout the country. In Rajshahi, Khulna, Sylhet, Barisal, Rangpur, Jessore and Comilla regions private Universities do not offer pharmacy courses (B. Pharm. and M. Pharm.).
