O Depression is defined
as a real mental health syndrome which affects many people.(1)

O It shouldnot be ignored in hope that it will just get cured. Mostly, it is mere difficult to get rid, but instead it may grow into an even more severe problem. It is an illness but a treatable one. Grief and Sadness are the normal aspects of our emotional lives.(1)

O Major depression can bring an emotional and physical paralysis which
stops the patient to lead daily life. It will impact a person's emotional and physical life, along with relationships in family and also friends. It's a fearful cycle that will lead to true despair and suicidal tendencies too.(1)

OThe major breakthrough in treatment of the depression was the discovery of fluoxitine in early 1970s. Fluoxitine is an active ingredient in anti-depressive medication which marketed as Prozac, and it was approved for use by Federal Drug Administration (FDA) in the year 1987.(1)(2)

OFluoxitine is a serotonin reuptake inhibitor, which means it increases amount of serotonin flowing to the brain, and it greatly eases the depression along with panic feelings, obsessive compulsive disorder. Since its discovery fluoxitine has become the most popular anti-depressive medication at present(2).

ONow it is sold in different formulations under different trade names, and is also used to treat the related depressive syndromes including the premenstrual syndrome and also the "intrusive thoughts" that can accompany the obsessive disorders.(2)

O The breakthrough of the fluoxitine has eased the pain of depression for many sufferers.(2)

Quote: Depression is defined as a real mental health syndrome which affects many people.(1) Unquote: Depression is a mental attitudinal syndrome where in a person deviates from normal with respect to thinking, feeling, perception, understanding, socializing, behavioral patterns. He/she is as normal as anybody in the new environment, new acquaintance and the like but opens up into or chooses to go back into the deviated mood once the environment / acquaintance becomes bit familiar. Such people invariably would try to overcome their low-feel by over-reaction to the situation to cover up their weakness. Treatment: The treatment involves counseling and medication. The use of drugs should be the last resort in treatment. Understanding the patient is the primary need. It is a tough job and what is understood (about the pt) should never be treated as conclusive as the version of the patient as well as their close relatives / well wishers / associates could vary as any interview cannot be an exhaustive one . Here is a case where a patient with such a problem was treated by almost 4 psychologist and psychiatric specialists of course in a span of about 20 years. I said 4 specialists because the patient had tendency to look for a new doctor with a hope of getting better treatment. A common approach with all was: Collecting the pt profile through a counselor: Here the counselor translates the expression of the patient to their technical terminology which many times is not the actual expression of the pt. The psychiatrist studies the report of the counselor and talks very BRIEFLY to the patient, scribbles 2-3 drugs and sends out to come back after 2 weeks. In the next visit: The doctor directly asks:"HOW ARE YOU"? The pt: fine sir! Dr: HAVE YOU FELT ANY IMPROVEMENT? Pt: (Confused) little better! [Because the pt doesn't know what is improvement ] Dr: WHAT PERCENTAGE IMPROVEMENT? 25, 50, 75%? Pt: (More confused): yaa....50%! Dr: OH' GOOD, YOU ARE IMPROVING, I WILL MAKE LITTLE CHANGE IN THE MEDICINE AND YOU SEE ME AFTER 2 WKS, OK? Pt: Yes sir, but I am feeling ..... Dr. OH' DONT WORRY, YOU WILL BE ALRIGHT WITH THIS. BUT PLEASE BE CHEERFUL, KEEP YOUR MIND CALM AND RELAXED, AVOID WORRYING, EAT WELL, GO FOR A WALK AND SLEEP WELL, OK, OoooooooKaaaaaay , smiles, grins and closes the issue. Out of the clinic. Patient to the close relatives / well wishers / associates: The Dr doesn't understand my problem Bottom line: ? ? ?

Bottom line is: Fortunately or unfortunately the patient himself is the evaluator of his / her own treatment !!!
