Role Description This position will support the application of human genetics to drug discovery and medicines development as an integral part of the PharmaTherapeutics Human Genetics group. The main focus will be on cardiometabolic disease with additional work in the areas of neuroscience and pain and sensory disorders. Rapid and ongoing advances in quantitative and laboratory sciences continue to generate detailed and large-scale, genetic, genomic, phenotypic, molecular and other data with unprecedented speed. Such data enable characterization of how genetic and related sources of human variation underpin health and disease. Innovative integration, interrogation and application of such data can: (i) identify and prioritize therapeutic targets most likely to succeed; and (ii) identify patient populations most likely to benefit from specific therapies. As part of this commitment, an integrated and multi-disciplinary Human Genetics strategy has been developed to ensure optimal contribution of relevant human genetic data to decision making in the discovery and development of new medicines. This strategy focuses on identifying, generating, integrating and applying such data from several sources — including from genetic, genomic, biochemical, clinical, real-world, molecular, cellular and other studies — to inform research and development of new medicines in PharmaTherapeutics. NB. Candidates applying from leading academic institutes will be encouraged, where appropriate, to maintain links with their academic institutes. In addition, Pfizer encourages participation in research consortia and publication of research. Responsibilities • Apply quantitative human genetic and related data to inform: (i) identification of novel therapeutic targets; (ii) review and validation of therapeutic hypotheses; (iii) mechanistic understanding of disease pathogenesis and causal pathways; and (iv) matching novel therapies to patients with relevant pathogenic trajectories. • Conduct innovative research and analyses of genetic, molecular, clinical and other related data to inform Research Units within PharmaTherapeutics in target discovery, target validation, identification of potential disease indications, and precision medicine. • Work in close collaboration with research biologists and project teams to identify the best opportunities to translate genetic and related data to inform and prioritize assets in the portfolio; work in close collaboration with clinical teams to inform optimum patient selection, stratification and trial design. • Identify and develop plausible and tractable biological hypotheses premised upon robust human data for novel therapeutics aligned with projected unmet patient needs; solidify such hypotheses in collaboration with research unit teams; facilitate biology, pharmacology and chemistry follow-up of such hypotheses by working with research unit project teams and other internal colleagues. • Work with internal and external population resources, databases and biobanks - and interact with leading internal and external experts in genetics, biology, chemistry and clinical medicine. Leverage genetics and genomics, large scale datasets and phenotype information to inform drug discovery, translational sciences and drug development. • Work in close collaboration with colleagues with expertise in computational biology, biostatistics, bioinformatics and other quantitative disciplines to develop and apply innovative and integrative methods to internal Pfizer data, publically available data, and data generated through external collaborations. • Engage with Research Units and Business Units to articulate, educate and highlight the applications of population research and human genetics across the spectrum of Pharma R&D. Qualifications • Background in biological and/or quantitative sciences & PhD in genetics, statistical genetics, or genetic epidemiology. Demonstration of authoring impactful publications in human genetics. • Expertise in genetics. Sound statistical and quantitative skills, with working knowledge of epidemiological principals and population-based research. • Experience of working with, integrating and applying genetic association data to inform focused research questions. .• Familiarity with one or more of molecular biology, cell culture, iPSc, epigenetics,metabolomics or transcriptomics is desirable • Demonstrable working knowledge and experience of working in cardiometabolic and/or neurological diseases and/or pain biology preferred; sufficient working knowledge of biology, chemistry and pharmacology to be able to interact intelligently and credibly with multi-disciplinary project teams helpful. • Familiarity with the application of genetic and related data in a drug discovery and development setting helpful, but not necessary. Core skills: • Able to effectively interact and communicate with multidisciplinary scientists, researchers and non-scientists – internally and externally; excellent communication, interpersonal and presentation skills essential. • Successful track record of effectively working in multi-disciplinary teams. • Able to support teams, multi-task and prioritize amongst competing time-sensitive projects, as part of a multi-disciplinary matrix team; able to work effectively as part of a research team, whilst being innovative, entrepreneurial and proactive. • Willingness to learn new skills and be “change agile”. • Passionate interest in using genetics and related data as a tool to discover and develop new medicines. • Successful track record of contributing to and coordinating research collaborations preferred. • Able to manage projects effectively.
