Role Description •Support for the External R&D Innovation unit in the scientific area of Technologies, including those associated with small & large molecules, formulation & delivery, IT & BT-related efforts. This position will be key in providing a competitive advantage to Pfizer by applying industry-leading scientific expertise to searching, evaluating, and integrating the best external opportunities for all relevant WRD Lines. •External R&D Innovation is a mechanism to connect Pfizer with leading external scientists and Biotech CSOs, run by a high profile R&D team working closely with key internal R&D experts and in partnership with Pfizer Business Development and Legal. The goal is to create and draw on global innovative external opportunities in both the biotech and academic space to strengthen Pfizer's R&D pipeline via strategic integration of select opportunities ensuring continued leadership in large and small molecules and to become a leader in biotherapeutics. Responsibilities •Incumbent will need to apply industry-leading scientific expertise to support the build-up and delivery from Pfizer R&D portfolio via the global scouting, assessment and integration of outstanding enabling and breakthrough technology platforms. The goal is to enhance the Pfizer R&D pipeline via integrating technologies with a clear strategic fit to Pfizer’s R&D portfolio. •Working with the CSO & Partnerline Heads for the relevant WRD functions, the Head of Technologies, ERDI, will help to define, implement, and execute the respective external R&D strategies in close collaboration with key business functions (including Research, Clinical, Commercial, Legal/IP, and WWBD) and based on a thorough assessment of Pfizer’s product pipeline, technology opportunities, and strategic fit. Specific areas of support through scouting & networking, technical evaluation, and guiding through the process will include, but might not be limited to: -Global Biologics Technology: Continued support through self and dedicated resource regarding sourcing/scouting, logistic/operational support, and enhanced global outreach. Additional needs might include support externalization of assets and technologies, -Worldwide Med Chem: focus on structural chemistry, mostly GPCRs and Ion channels( eg, in CNS and Pain area), as well as Cell Technologies, eg, access to humanized cell reagents (eg, differentiated stable cell lines, functional genomics, biomarker discovery, etc.). -Pharmatherapeutics and Biotherapeutics Pharm Sci: focus on drug ddelivery, asymmetric tissue distribution, advanced manufacturing (sensor or modular technology, material sciences), computational analysis, and enhanced analytical techniques,. -Precision Medicine: Precision Medicine & Diagnostics Field with focus on scouting different Dx technologies -Business Technology /IT: focus on seeking breakthrough and ‘push the envelope’ opportunities (evolutionary vs. revolutionary) in the areas of Big Data, Digital health, etc. Duties will include: Provide coordination, leadership and guidance to the Pfizer ERDI function of Head of Technologies. The goal of this function is to: •support the centralized ERDI concept regardless of the decentralized placement of its members; includes the alignment of ERDI representatives focused on pursuing and integrating products, programs, or technologies in distinct areas for the respective RUs, TUs, and Biotech Units towards a consistent and transparent approach of strategic prioritization, decision making, and cross-functional communication/utilization of external opportunities •partner with ERDI RU/TU representatives embedded in Units to maintain critical, scientifically independent and innovation-focused thinking; includes application of operational excellence across the annual exercise of assessing and prioritizing 'gaps' that define the external R&D strategy of each Unit •provide recommendations for cross-ERDI Unit prioritizations of external R&D strategies; monitor execution of integrating external opportunities into Pfizer R&D portfolio in accord with BioTx strategy, track and analyze progress/impact of funded research; provide regular updates of the group's progress and performance metrics to senior leadership (ERDI, WRD LT, ELT) •develop and present proposals/recommendations for strategic & operational optimization opportunities Provide high quality documentation and presentation to Senior Management (up to ELT, Board, CEO) as requested. This includes the provision of strategic and operational expertise to ERDI functions and key partner lines within Pfizer (including, but not limited to, Research, Clinical, Commercial, Business Development, Project Management, Legal) Pro-actively contribute in rendering Pfizer the preferred partner of choice within Academia and Biotech and represent Pfizer to external partners and maintain a professional environment. Represent Pfizer at conferences as well as scientific and other business-related meetings as required (including presentations) Qualifications Education and Experience: •PhD, MD, or MD/PhD in the field of Biological or Clinical Sciences •15 + years of postdoctoral experience in relevant fields in academia and preferable Biotech or Pharma •Publication in leading journals in field of study •Experienced in an operational and/or strategic Pharma R&D function and thorough understanding of the entire R&D drug development process •Communicates well with bench scientists and senior management, including CSOs, PL Heads, WRD Head of Research •Experience in leading cross disciplinary teams with successful track record in achieving results Technical Skills Requirements: Strong scientific skills and expert level of understanding is expected in technology platforms relating to the generation, optimization, manufacturing, and (targeted) delivery of drugs (small and large molecules). In addition, a solid understanding of technology platforms critical to the generation, storage and analysis of big data (from clinical data cohorts, to target identification, to diagnostics & biomarkers) is strongly desired. Furthermore, candidate needs to demonstrate strong network building capabilities in the field, including establishment of a strong global network with Key Opinion Leaders and academic and Biotech institutions leading within several of these fields is required. Excellent written and verbal skills to summarize and present technology opportunities (eg, to WRD Lines, WRD LT, BDC, etc.) required.
