Its really long time I posted a blog. I was busy with my project and thesis submission. Let me not only take an excuse but also remind you all that I am back on to this platform..
Well, a good start is half done..Let me start with a very good and interesting topic I read recently. "Self curable skin disease"
To all those to whom it doesn't sound that interesting, it is a cancer mechanism harnessed by disease cells and banished the mutant gene.
Yes, you heard it absolutely right.....
A rare skin disease named Ichthyosis, characterized by breakdown of the skin cells and its structure resulting in thick, scaly layers of inflammed skin. This is likely due to mutation in keratin 10 in diseased cells which otherwise form filaments helping in skin integrity.
In some patients small patches of healthy skin grew in number as well as size.
such patients called as 'Ichthyosis with confetti' (IWC), the hero of the study.
These patients were examined and was found that the small patches are actually healthy
tissues which doesnot have any mutation.
Many scientists have given the possible explanations. A few for better understanding:
- Geneticist Mr.Richard Lifton, reasoned that mitotic recombination (exchange of DNA by dividing maternal and paternal chromosomes). The diseased cells genome of chromosome 17 has cache of keratin gene.
- Each healthy patch depicts a single mitotic recombination creating a cell containing two healthy copies of keratin 10. With mutation, healthy cell is cranked by stem cell and competes with diseased cells. "What we're seeing here is natural selection occurring under the skin," as said by Choate.
- Mitotic recombination occuring at varying frequencies along the genome of keratin 10 is really an interesting speculation was said by Bert Vogelstein, a cancer researcher.
What ever may be the explanation, One would never have any cancer if this mitotic recombination could be imitated onto all mutations.
(Stop dreaming folks!!!!) The work has already been started on blood disorders.
Lets all hope that like this skin disease all the mutations could be reverted and let there not be any anticancerous drug causing severe adverse effects.
