What is the definition of single punch tableting machine?

Tablets are prepared or made by compressing a formulation containing a drug or the drug with excipients on stamping machines called presses. Single punch tableting machines are commonly used in pharma

ceutical industry. They are high-speed machines that create thousands of tablets in a small period. The compounding pharmacist uses a variation of these machines. It is called a single-punch tablet press and makes one tablet at a time.

Mechanism:

  • It is the simplest machine for manufacturing of tablets. Single station press employs a single tooling station that is a die and a pair of lower and upper punch.
  • In this single press the compression force is exerted by only the upper punch while the lower punch is immovable.
  • The compaction of the powdered material is through upper and lower punches pressure. Then the resultant tablets are formed in the die cavity with their size and shape. It involves compression of only the upper punch.

What are the components of the single punch tableting machine?

Tablet single punch machine are designed with the following basic components:

Hopper: It is used to hold the materials (drug or the drug with excipients/ granules) to be compressed and supply the material to the die and removes the tablet after its compression

Dies: Dies defines the shape and the size of the tablet by allowing the lower and upper punch to come close together to compress the material.

Lower and upper punches: These are used for compressing of the materials (drug or the drug with excipients/ granules) within the dies.

Cam track: This is the component used for guiding the movement of the punches.

Capacity regulator: To adjust the position of the lower punch to accommodate the required quantity of materials by the die.

Ejection regulator: To adjust the position of the lower punch, so that its highest position is at par with the surface of the die.

Driving wheel: It helps in the movement of the lower punch, the upper punch and hopper shoe and also check their movement.

How the single punch tableting machines works?

A tablet is formed by the combined pressing action of two punches and a die. Several movements takes place at a time to form in a tablet making machine. The cycle of the movement is as follows

FILLING:

Step-1: Upper punch is withdrawn from the die by the upper cam, bottom punch is low in the die so powder falls in through the hole and fill the die.

Stage-2: Bottom punch move ups to adjust the powder weight, it rasies and expelles the powder.

COMPRESSION:

Stage-3: Upper punch is driven into the die by upper cam. Bottom punch is rasied by lower cam. Both punch heads pass between the heavy rollers to compress the tablet.

EJECTION:

Stage-4: Upper punch is withdrawn by the upper cam. Lower punch is pushed up and expel the tablets. Tablet is romved from the die surface by the surface plate.

Stage-5: Return to the 1st stage.

The tablet making machine is adjusted for the ejection of tablets, capacity and compression. When these adjustment are done, the adjusting screws are locked in position. The machine is then ready for the compression of the materials into the tablet. It is necessary to check at regular intervals the setting of the tablet making machine during the course of the compression of the materials into the tablets on the large scale manufacturing.

What are the advantages of single punch tableting machines?

  • The machine structure is rational and small.
  • It is very easy to operate and it operates at high utilization ratio.
  • The machine utilize a high amount of pressure to reduce the weight difference between the tablets while maintaining a low noise level.
  • The machine also provides continuous control over the loading of the raw materials, and the thickness of tablet.
  • Each and every function of the machine can be compared favourably with the imported machines.

What are the industrial applications of single punch tableting machines?

  • This machine is used for pressing different kinds of drug and drug containing different excipients into round tablets. It is used in lab or batch production.
  • It can be hand-operated.
  • One pair of punching die is used in this press, so filling depth of material (drug and drug containing different excipients) and thickness of tablet are adjustable.

Examples:

  1. Chewable tablets (Mannitol-sweet, cooling taste, other ingredients-binders (e.g., acacia), lubricants (e.g., stearic acid), colors, and flavors).

The desired quantity of mixture is weighed and then pressed with a single-punch tablet machine.

  1. Effervescent tablets (tartaric acid, citric acid, and sodium bicarbonate).

These powders are weighed and pressed into tablets using the same procedure as chewable tablets.

  1. Compressed tablets (active drug, a diluent (e.g., lactose), a disintegrant (e.g., starch), and a lubricant (e.g., 1% magnesium stearate)).

How the single punch tableting machine is lubrication?

  • Lubricating moving parts and friction surfaces will ensure normal operation of the machine and prolong the service life of important parts.
  • So lubrication should be added to the oil cups, oil holes and friction surfaces before the tablet machine is used.
  • The machine should have an empty run first.
  • Oil should be added in good time.
  • Do not add too much at one time or cause spillover as there is a risk of contamination.

What are the precautions for the maintenance of single punch tableting machine?

  • Read the instructions carefully when setting the machine up for the first time, or when using the machine for the first time.
  • This machine must only run in one direction.
  • Adjusting the belt is done through two screws. Following an adjustment, careful fine tuning is necessary.
  • When using with electricity, the upper punch needs to be in its highest position before the machine is turned on. The aim is that the upper punch has maximum inertia or it is very easy for the machine to stick which can lead to breaks.
