Answer:

GELATIN is a heterogeneous material (mixture of peptides and proteins) obtained from natural source; however it is not available as such in nature. It is obtained by the hydrolysis of treated animal collagen (which is the main protein component of connective tissue). So the starting material for the preparation of gelatin is the collagen present in raw materials.

Gelatin with below characteristics, is suitable for capsule preparation:

O It is non-toxic

O It is readily soluble in biological fluids at body temperature

O It is a good film forming agent capable of producing required thickness for the capsule shells

O Solutions of gelatin at concentrations about 40% w/v are mobile at 50o C (whereas the same composition of agar is not mobile)

O Gelatin solutions in water show sol-gel converts just few degrees above room temperature

Answer:

Gelatin is obtained from processing of various naturally sources like bones, hides, skin, connective tissue of animals like bovine, pork and fish.

There is an evidence of mad cow disease or BSE (Bovine Spongiform Encephalopathy) that resulted in the progress of TSE (Transmitting animal Spongiform Encephalopathy) agents. The processing steps like heating, acid treatment, alkali treatment of animal tissues should be able to minimize the risk of BSE by reducing the levels of TSE agents.
